Is this the first time they have announced the preliminary awards right after the prelims? I only remember them announcing finalists previously and presenting all awards after finals.

Congratulations to Franklin on their 1st Grand Championship at CoC. Thoughts:
Franklin had a show that was BOA compatible without being a BOA sellout. There was no need for overuse of props, voice-overs, etc, just exciting unique design. Whereas the Franklin from the old days (pre 21st century) always came out clean and entertaining without taking a lot of chances, the new Franklin has varied tempos, varied dynamics, great visual effect both in body movement and actual drill and interesting musical arrangements played well. Total package.
Jasper - great performers, very well played, well designed show, excellent staging and effect.
Dobyns-Bennett - very well thought out show, well performed, played much more cleanly and effectively in Finals.
Siegel - very techincally proficient and a high level of clean, not as engaging this year as the groups that beat them. not a lot of emotion built into the program.
McGavock and John Overton - these two groups I feel are on a similar path. Both play and move well, but both are missing reaching the level of high proficiency they used to reach - just under that level. Also, I feel that both programs are playing it much safer than they used to - it feels like they lack the confidence to take the risks they used to take and let the kids succeed - or fail. You don't know what level the kids can attain in performance if they don't get the chance. That's what seems to be missing for me. Also, why can't McGavock seem to keep a decent sized color guard for the size of the band?
Barren County - as always they had a well designed show that they performed the heck out of, but just not the effect that they had with their show a couple in 2010.
Columbia Central - I have a hard time making comments about this group because they just don't do the type of shows at the level of performance that they used to display.

I do not agree that McGavock was playing it safe. The music and drill were really complex in my view.
Things were being added and enhanced right up to the week before COC. That is NOT playing it safe.
I do think that trying to add props and the like to be more "BOA Friendly" was a mistake. They did not need that and I do not think it helped them much at the COC.
In the end it came down to cleanliness.

That's cool, it was just my opinion based on what I have seen them do for the last 40 years. I certainly didn't mean it as an insult. It's not so much playing it safe as in doing something easy or not complex as much as playing it safe as in not doing something very new, original and ground-breaking. That's what they did at the height of their success.
